Student Wellness Announcement

As many of you know, we have been experiencing an unusually high amount of student sicknesses this week. We have confirmed cases of Strep Throat, Bronchitis, and Influenza A. Common symptoms include: Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and high fever.

If your child has a fever of 100 degrees, or more, or is experiencing diarrhea or vomiting, they must stay home until they have been without a high temperature 24 hours and/or the vomiting and diarrhea has stopped for 24 hours. The student MUST be symptom free for 24 hours before they may return.

Nurse Pam has compiled a list of helpful hints and recommendations to help keep your family safe this flu season.

Preventing the Spread of Infectious Diseases

Decrease your risk of infecting yourself or others:

• Wash your hands often. This is especially important before and after preparing food, before eating and after using the toilet.
• Stay at home if you have signs and symptoms of an infection. Don't go to work or class if you're vomiting, have diarrhea or are running a fever.
• Disinfect the 'hot zones' in your residence. These include the kitchen and bathroom — two rooms that can have a high concentration of bacteria and other infectious agents. Pay special attention to door knobs and handles.
• Don't share personal items. Use your own toothbrush and comb. Avoid sharing drinking glasses or dining utensils.
• Spray Lysol can help disinfect the air and furniture.
• Cover your Cough. Cough into the bend of your arm or into a tissue. Covering with hands will only allow the bacteria to be transferred to everything that is touched.

Helpful information to get better sooner

 If you are running a fever, drink plenty of water or Gatorade.
 Rest is essential. Returning to normal activities too soon will prolong the illness.
 Vitamin C helps boost the body’s immune system and is a natural decongestant.
 If you have diarrhea stay hydrated. Drink plenty of clear liquids, such as water, juice, and broth but avoid caffeine. Bananas maybe helpful.

With a little common sense and the proper precautions, you can avoid infectious diseases and avoid spreading them. If you have any questions, please call the office.
